Perhaps it’s all in my head, but I feel like I’ve been a little AWOL recently. While this may or may not be the case, I certainly haven’t been as blogging obsessed over the past couple of weeks, and I have only one thing to blame – my new guilty pleasure, Pretty Little Liars.
The TV show has been going for a few seasons already, but I’ve only just gotten into it now. I suppose the fact that my girls, from the 7th graders to the 10th graders, are all either watching it or reading the books and in love with the series is the main reason why I decided to give it a shot. It’s nice to know what they’re in to, and it is a chance to bond with them before or after class as well. A few weeks ago, I had asked my 7th graders to write about parties, and one of the girls said, “Parties always involve drugs and alcohol.” She’s twelve going on thirteen! It’s Japan! I was like, “What? Not all parties are about those things!” Have I been going to the wrong ones all my life?
Anyway, as I was watching the first episode of season one, I was thinking, “What is this? Why on earth am I watching this?” After all, it’s not the most well-written or even acted series on TV. But as the end credits rolled up, all I could do was click to watch the second episode, which became the next one and the next one and the next one.
Last night I finished season two. It’s been 10 days! That’s crazy, I know, but I haven’t been this obsessed since Sex and the City! They always manage to end the episode leaving a question in your mind that you absolutely need to watch the next episode to get (slightly closer to) the answer to. At the start I didn’t care much for any of the characters, not even the main ones, but they’ve really developed and and they’ve really grown on me. I like all four of the main girls: Hannah, Aria, Spencer, and Emily (though I can’t really say the same of Alison), and I do admit to crushing on Caleb and Toby. The girls are all so pretty, and some of the lines they come out with are pretty amazing, I must say. I love it when Spencer says to Hannah, “You have all the subtlety of a hand grenade,” to which Hannah replies with a smile and a, “Thank you.”
It’s a show that has great suspense, and I’m usually squealing at my computer screen saying things like, “Noooo don’t go with him! He’s a bad guy!” or, “Don’t trust her, she’s lying to you!” or even, “WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING???” (Yes, I get very excited.) All of the lying and the secrets waiting to be unravelled are so tantalising.
Either way, I’m hooked, and still have two seasons to get through. I wish I could just lounge around in my pyjamas all day and every day until I’m done. Sadly, real life gets in the way. Although recently, with my situation at work, with all sorts of backstabbing, lies, and secrets, going on behind the scenes, I am starting to feel like I belong in the show in the town of Rosewood as well.
I’m sure you can all guess how I’ll be spending my weekends to come.
If you’re a fan of the show, let me know in the comments below! I’d love to hear your thoughts about it.
In the meantime, I hope you’re all having a fantastic weekend, and would like to leave you with a couple of clips from the show.
P.S. – “Never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret.”
